Find your state of flow.
What is meant by ‘State of Flow’?
The state of flow, also known as "being in the zone," is a psychological concept that describes a state of complete absorption and engagement in an activity. During a state of flow, individuals experience a sense of intense focus, motivation, and enjoyment as they become fully immersed in the task at hand.
These are activities that are defined as “hitting the sweat spot”. These are things we do that absorb us in an enjoyable and energising way. We get engrossed in them and don’t see the time passing. Like an artist in the flow of his creative process.
Have you experienced the state of flow?
I fear very few of us spend much of our time in a state of flow. This simply means that most of us are missing out on this naturally in-built in us, self-recharging ability.
Last week, I interacted with more than 100 different people as patients in my consulting room, across different clinical settings. When I engage with my patients, I immerse myself in their life stories and a true human exchange takes place: their vulnerability for my knowledge, guidance and empathy. I believe that these encounters can be transformative and empowering.
They share about their work and personal life, leaving me often astonished about the lack of joy and fulfillment. Most people today work long hours at a demandingly fast pace and don’t feel happier, healthier or more creative. The state of flow sounds out of reach.
Research shows that in a state of “flow” the human brain is flooded with happy substances such as dopamine and serotonin. Intriguingly the state of flow increases productivity and maximises results.
In simple terms, the way we function and work is having a significant impact on our health and wellbeing.
This weekend, I would encourage you to take stock of your regular activities. Take 10 minutes to make a list of your usual daily activities? Check your screen time, calculate time spent on emails and browsing the net…
How many of them hit your sweet spot? How much time do you spend in a state of flow and that means for you?
Imagine what the results might be if you increased that time by 20%?
