World Mental Health Day Fostering wellbeing in the corporate world with a holistic approach

Written in collaboration with Mihaela Shehova, IPHM

October is very special month as it steals our attention and shifts it towards mental health more than any other time of the year. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2024 is "It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace". And although days like these are more than important, we should look at wellbeing as an overall ever-going project, which is evenly spread out throughout the year.

In today’s fast-paced, high-pressure work environment, promoting employee wellbeing is essential, particularly for creative teams who face unique challenges like burnout, mental fatigue, and managing the flow of inspiration. Developing a structured corporate wellbeing plan is key to enhancing both productivity and job satisfaction.

I have been there – stressed out because of deadlines, I have had burnouts, I have experienced work-related anxiety while undermining my own mental and physical health. The reasons are many and complex, but we can get out of this what feels as a never ending cycle.

The truth is that it is vital employers to understand what an impact the approach towards wellbeing they adopt has over the wider team. I am passionate about wellbeing as this focus is what is keeping me productive and am privileged to work with people who understands that and cherish it.

Even if the company you work for hasn’t established a proper wellbeing plan – you can initiate a few activities if you are passioned about that as much as I am.

How we can outline a holistic wellbeing plan for a creative team, integrating physical, mental, and emotional health, all while fostering a sense of community.

These are some ideas…

Monthly Sub-Themes and Actions

The wellbeing plan should be structured around monthly sub-themes, each designed to focus on a specific aspect of health, from mental wellness to physical fitness, knowledge-sharing, and team bonding.

  1. Еducate and Communicate - Mental Health Awareness
Let’s focus on building awareness of mental health. Invite a guest speaker to lead a session on managing anxiety, stress, and the unique pressures faced by creatives.

  2. Learn and Grow - Knowledge Sharing
The spotlight has to shift to learning and growth. Launch a quarterly newsletter, featuring personal wellbeing tips, stories, and resources shared by the team. In addition, a team member will lead a lunch-and-learn session on a relevant topic such as “Managing Creative Blocks” or “Improving Focus with Mindfulness.” By opening avenues for internal skill-sharing, the team strengthens its collective knowledge while fostering a supportive learning environment.

  3. Brew Connections - Social Wellbeing
Strengthening social connections is crucial for fostering a sense of belonging. Introduce "Brew Connections," a casual gathering held every three to four months where team members can unwind and chat over tea. The focus is on non-work-related discussions to help deepen interpersonal bonds.

  4. Nurture Mind and Body - Physical and Mental Fitness
Emphasise physical activity and mindfulness. A one-hour yoga, Tai Chi session or meditation will help the team relieve stress and improve mental clarity. For those who prefer outdoor activities, a guided walking tour is another option. Additionally, team members can be encouraged to share mindfulness tips as part of a "Things You Can See, Hear, Touch" initiative, where they can contribute their favourite sensory relaxation techniques.

  5. Share Experiences - Personal Stories and Expert Insights
Encourages storytelling and learning from expert insights. A guest speaker can host a session on mental health tailored to creatives, offering strategies for maintaining balance in high-pressure environments. A Creative Show-and-Tell can also be introduced, giving employees the opportunity to showcase personal projects or hobbies that inspire them outside of work. This helps team members bond and develop a deeper understanding of each other's passions beyond their professional roles.

  6. Show Recognition - Positive Culture
Focus on recognition and fostering a positive team culture. Celebrate the "Kindest Colleague," with small acts of kindness recognised and shared with the whole team.

Let’s normalise sharing about our mental and physical health with colleagues and mentors!
